You never want to have to give up things you enjoy because they are having a negative effect on your body. Especially coffee.

Unfortunately, acid reflux (or heartburn) is something that steers a lot of people away from coffee, even if they otherwise like it.

Coffee is quite acidic. If you remember the pH scale from high school chemistry...

...pH goes from 0-14 with 0 being the most acidic and 7 being neutral, like water.

For some people's stomachs, it's enough to throw the chemistry off and cause problems.

Most coffee is between 4.5 and 5. That is acidic.

Fortunately, a lot of innovations in recent years have allowed coffee companies to bring the acidity of their coffee down. New low-acid coffee brands launch quite regularly.

Some of them keep the acid low by selecting certain beans that grow in soil and at altitudes known to produce less acidic coffee.

Other companies have developed special treating and roasting methods to reduce the acidity after the beans are harvested.

Some do both.
